Who is the Holy Spirit?

Some religions teach the “trinity” – God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.  Some teachers refute that, I guess mainly because in that religion, some other doctrines and practices or rituals were and are debunked by a lot of people.

But what does the Scripture say about the Holy Spirit?

Let’s add references to Scripture here so we can all understand.

    Role of the Spirit – (John 14:16-31) NASB

    16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;

    17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

    18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

    19 After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also.

    20 In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.

    21 He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.

    22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him,

    “Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?”

    23 Jesus answered and said to him,

    “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.

    24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.

    25 “These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you.

    26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

    27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

    28 You heard that I said to you,

    ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’

    If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

    29 Now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe.

    30 I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me;

    31 but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, let us go from here.” – (John 14:16-31) NASB

    From the above scriptural reference, we can find these two specific verses below, when our Lord Jesus Christ talked about (1) God The Father, (2) God the Son, and (3) the Holy Spirit – as spoken in one sentence.

    (1) God the Father:

    16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; – John 14:16

    26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” – John 14:26

    (2) God the Son:

    16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;”– John 14:16

    26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” – John 14:26

    (3) The Holy Spirit:

    16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;”– John 14:16

    26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” – John 14:26

    The Baptism of Jesus – (Matthew 3:13-17) NASB

    13 Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him.

    14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying,

    “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?”

    15 But Jesus answering said to him,

    “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”

    Then he permitted Him.

    16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,

    17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said,

    “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” – Matthew 3:13-17 (NASB)

    Here we can notice:

    16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,

    17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said,

    “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” – Matthew 3:13-17 (NASB)

    “The Spirit of God descending as a dove”, as John the baptist saw it, descending upon Jesus.

    “The Spirit of truth” as described by Jesus :

    16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;

    17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” – John 14:16-17

    The Holy Spirit Promised – (John 16:5-15) NASB

    5 “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me,

    ‘Where are You going?’

    6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

    7 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

    8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;

    9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;

    10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;

    11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

    12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

    13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

    14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

    15 All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.” – (John 16:5-15) NASB

  4. .

    21 So Jesus said to them again,

    “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.

    22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them,

    Receive the Holy Spirit.

    23 If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.” – John 20:21-23

    The Unpardonable Sin – (Matthew 12:30-32) NASB

    30 “He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters.”

    31 “Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.

    32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. – Matthew 12:30-32
