Matthew 26 (NASB)<\/h3>\n

The Plot to Kill Jesus<\/strong><\/em>
\n1 When Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples, 2 \u201cYou know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be handed over for crucifixion.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n

3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, named Caiaphas; 4 and they plotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him. 5 But they were saying, \u201cNot during the festival, otherwise a riot might occur among the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Precious Ointment<\/strong><\/em>
\n6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, at the home of Simon the leper, 7 a woman came to Him with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at the table. 8 But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, \u201cWhy this waste? 9 For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.\u201d 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, \u201cWhy do you bother the woman? For she has done a good deed to Me. 11 For you always have the poor with you; but you do not always have Me. 12 For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it to prepare Me for burial. 13 Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Judas\u2019s Bargain<\/strong><\/em>
\n14 Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, \u201cWhat are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?\u201d And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him. 16 From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus.<\/p>\n

17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, \u201cWhere do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?\u201d 18 And He said, \u201cGo into the city to a certain man, and say to him, \u2018The Teacher says, \u201cMy time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/span> 19 The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.<\/p>\n

The Last Passover<\/strong><\/em>
\n20 Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. 21 As they were eating, He said, \u201cTruly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.\u201d<\/span> 22 Being deeply grieved, they each one began to say to Him, \u201cSurely not I, Lord?\u201d 23 And He answered, \u201cHe who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.\u201d<\/span> 25 And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, \u201cSurely it is not I, Rabbi?\u201d Jesus *said to him, \u201cYou have said it yourself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lord\u2019s Supper Instituted<\/strong><\/em>
\n26 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, \u201cTake, eat; this is My body.\u201d<\/span> 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, \u201cDrink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father\u2019s kingdom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

30 After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.<\/p>\n

31 Then Jesus said to them, \u201cYou will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, \u2018I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered.\u2019 32 But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.\u201d<\/span> 33 But Peter said to Him, \u201cEven though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away.\u201d 34 Jesus said to him, \u201cTruly I say to you that this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.\u201d<\/span> 35 Peter *said to Him, \u201cEven if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.\u201d All the disciples said the same thing too.<\/p>\n

The Garden of Gethsemane<\/strong><\/em>
\n36 Then Jesus *came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and *said to His disciples, \u201cSit here while I go over there and pray.\u201d<\/span> 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He *said to them, \u201cMy soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, \u201cMy Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.\u201d<\/span> 40 And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, \u201cSo, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus\u2019 Betrayal and Arrest<\/strong><\/em>
\n47 While He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, \u201cWhomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.\u201d 49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, \u201cHail, Rabbi!\u201d and kissed Him. 50 And Jesus said to him, \u201cFriend, do what you have come for.\u201d<\/span> Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.<\/p>\n

51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus reached and drew out his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus *said to him, \u201cPut your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, \u201cHave you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets.\u201d<\/span> Then all the disciples left Him and fled.<\/p>\n

Jesus before Caiaphas<\/strong><\/em>
\n57 Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. 58 But Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the officers to see the outcome.<\/p>\n

59 Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. 60 They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on two came forward, 61 and said, \u201cThis man stated, \u2018I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.\u2019\u201d 62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, \u201cDo You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?\u201d 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, \u201cI adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.\u201d 64 Jesus *said to him, \u201cYou have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, \u201cHe has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?\u201d They answered, \u201cHe deserves death!\u201d<\/p>\n

67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him, 68 and said, \u201cProphesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?\u201d<\/p>\n

Peter\u2019s Denials<\/strong><\/em>
\n69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, \u201cYou too were with Jesus the Galilean.\u201d 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, \u201cI do not know what you are talking about.\u201d 71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and *said to those who were there, \u201cThis man was with Jesus of Nazareth.\u201d 72 And again he denied it with an oath, \u201cI do not know the man.\u201d 73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, \u201cSurely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away.\u201d 74 Then he began to curse and swear, \u201cI do not know the man!\u201d And immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, \u201cBefore a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.\u201d And he went out and wept bitterly.”<\/p>\n

Matthew 27 (NASB)<\/h3>\n

Judas\u2019s Remorse<\/strong><\/em>
\n27 Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death; 2 and they bound Him, and led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate the governor.<\/p>\n

3 Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, \u201cI have sinned by betraying innocent blood.\u201d But they said, \u201cWhat is that to us? See to that yourself!\u201d 5 And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. 6 The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, \u201cIt is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.\u201d 7 And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter\u2019s Field as a burial place for strangers. 8 For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: \u201cAnd they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one whose price had been set by the sons of Israel; 10 and they gave them for the Potter\u2019s Field, as the Lord directed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jesus before Pilate<\/strong><\/em>
\n11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, \u201cAre You the King of the Jews?\u201d And Jesus said to him, \u201cIt is as you say.\u201d<\/span> 12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer. 13 Then Pilate *said to Him, \u201cDo You not hear how many things they testify against You?\u201d 14 And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so the governor was quite amazed.<\/p>\n

15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the people any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16 At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. 17 So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, \u201cWhom do you want me to release for you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?\u201d 18 For he knew that because of envy they had handed Him over.<\/p>\n

19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, \u201cHave nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.\u201d 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death. 21 But the governor said to them, \u201cWhich of the two do you want me to release for you?\u201d And they said, \u201cBarabbas.\u201d 22 Pilate *said to them, \u201cThen what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?\u201d They all *said, \u201cCrucify Him!\u201d 23 And he said, \u201cWhy, what evil has He done?\u201d But they kept shouting all the more, saying, \u201cCrucify Him!\u201d<\/p>\n

24 When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, \u201cI am innocent of this Man\u2019s blood; see to that yourselves.\u201d 25 And all the people said, \u201cHis blood shall be on us and on our children!\u201d 26 Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.<\/p>\n

Jesus Is Mocked<\/strong><\/em>
\n27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him. 28 They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, \u201cHail, King of the Jews!\u201d 30 They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. 31 After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.<\/p>\n

32 As they were coming out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon, whom they pressed into service to bear His cross.<\/p>\n

The Crucifixion<\/strong><\/em>
\n33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34 they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.<\/p>\n

35 And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, \u201cTHIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.\u201d<\/p>\n

38 At that time two robbers *were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, \u201cYou who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.\u201d 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 \u201cHe saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He delights in Him; for He said, \u2018I am the Son of God.\u2019\u201d 44 The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.<\/p>\n

45 Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, \u201cEli, Eli, lama sabachthani?\u201d<\/span> that is, \u201cMy God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?\u201d<\/span> 47 And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, \u201cThis man is calling for Elijah.\u201d 48 Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49 But the rest of them said, \u201cLet us see whether Elijah will come to save Him.\u201d 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51 And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many. 54 Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, \u201cTruly this was the Son of God!\u201d<\/p>\n

55 Many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while ministering to Him. 56 Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.<\/p>\n

Jesus Is Buried<\/strong><\/em>
\n57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave.<\/p>\n

62 Now on the next day, the day after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, 63 and said, \u201cSir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, \u2018After three days I am to rise again.\u2019 64 Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, \u2018He has risen from the dead,\u2019 and the last deception will be worse than the first.\u201d 65 Pilate said to them, \u201cYou have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.\u201d 66 And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But as we come to the twenty-sixth chapter of the book of Matthew, I want to introduce to you two familiar men and maybe introduce them to you in a way that you haven\u2019t seen them in the past.<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s a tale of two men in this chapter.\u00a0 This was pointed out by Pastor John in a sermon I listened to.<\/p>\n

Just had to take these notes!\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

While when you read Matthew 26 and on in to chapter 27, you are focused on the Lord Jesus Christ who dominates these chapters as He goes to the cross.<\/p>\n

These are the accounts of His arrest and mock trial, and scourging, and execution on the cross.<\/p>\n

Because the light is so bright on Christ, because He\u2019s such a dominating figure, you can lose sight of a tale of two men that is going on at the very same time, and it\u2019s a very remarkable, remarkable tale.<\/p>\n

It fascinates me that these two men are the secondary characters in this chapter, and there really are no others.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Jesus and these two men.<\/h3>\n

You know them very well.<\/p>\n

They both had the most unique privilege and opportunity ever given to a human being ever, never to be given to anyone before or since.<\/p>\n

Both were personally called by Jesus to follow Him.<\/p>\n

Both answered the call and followed Him 24\/7 for three years, every day all day and every night all night, virtually.<\/p>\n

Both declared repeatedly to Him and to those around them their personal devotion to the Lord Jesus.<\/p>\n

Both were personally trained by Jesus for ministry.<\/p>\n

Both were students of Jesus; they were in that all-day-long classroom called discipleship.<\/p>\n

Both of them were being trained for ministry.<\/p>\n

Both of them were taught by Jesus.<\/p>\n

The unparalleled teacher, the most profound teacher that ever walked on earth.<\/p>\n

They were taught by Him in ways that they could understand that which was profound and unknown to the world.<\/p>\n

They were taught by precept, proposition, and they were taught by example to know the Word of God and to know the will of God and to know the truth concerning all things.<\/p>\n

They were given a divine worldview.<\/p>\n

They were taught how to respond to the truth of God and live it out obediently.<\/p>\n

Both men saw the miracles of Jesus every day throughout the duration of His ministry.<\/p>\n

They saw His power over demons.<\/p>\n

They saw His power over disease.<\/p>\n

They saw His power over death.<\/p>\n

They saw His power over nature.<\/p>\n

They saw His intellectual power to deflect every assault on Him from His enemies that came verbally as they tried to catch Him in His words.<\/p>\n

They saw the mastery that He had of the language and of truth and thought.<\/p>\n

Both men heard the Lord answer every important, penetrating, profound, theological question ever asked of Him.<\/p>\n

And they, no doubt, heard Him answer questions that no one asked, and the answers were always true and profound and clear.<\/p>\n

Both of them were daily confronted with their sinfulness.<\/p>\n

Both of them were daily reminded that they had fallen as the whole human race had and desperately needed forgiveness and salvation. They were very aware of that.<\/p>\n

Both of them understood that Jesus had come to proclaim good news to sinners.<\/p>\n

Both of them received and used divine power, power from Jesus, and authority from Jesus was delegated to them so that both of them were enabled to do miracles and to exercise power and authority over demons.<\/p>\n

Eventually both of them were sent out to preach.<\/p>\n

Both of them became preachers, and they preached that the Messiah Jesus was the Savior and the Son of God and the King.<\/p>\n

And they shared all the experiences together for those amazing three years.<\/p>\n

They were exposed to the Lord Jesus Christ in exactly the same way, the same experiences, the same period of time.<\/h3>\n

There\u2019s more.<\/p>\n

They both were sinners and they knew it. They knew it well.<\/p>\n

They both felt profound guilt about their sin, overwhelming guilt about their sin.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s more.<\/p>\n

They both were taken over by Satan, both of them, to take up satan\u2019s cause against the Lord Jesus.<\/p>\n

And in the end, they both betrayed Him, publicly, violently, strongly – openly, they betrayed Him.<\/h3>\n

And they did that at the end of that three years, just before He was crucified.<\/p>\n

As a result of what they did, both were sad, sorry, in fact they agonized over their betrayals, both of them did.<\/p>\n

One was so agonized that he killed himself.<\/p>\n

The other was so agonized that he repented.<\/p>\n

Two men whose lives were side by side in the presence of the Son of God.<\/h3>\n

One of them, in spite of his wicked betrayal of the Savior, is considered so honorable and so exalted a person that some of you are named after him.<\/p>\n

In fact, people have been named after him since the first century.<\/p>\n

And people will continue to be named after this betrayer.<\/p>\n

He is loved, his name is honored, and his name is Peter.\u00a0 The word doesn\u2019t mean anything particularly important; it\u2019s the word for \u201cstone.\u201d<\/h3>\n

The other man is considered so dishonorable, the other betrayer is so despicable that no one has his name.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t know anyone who has his name.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t know anyone\u2019s dog who has his name.\u00a0 He is hated.\u00a0 He is reviled.\u00a0 He is rejected.\u00a0 He is Judas and his name means \u201cpraised.\u201d<\/h3>\n

Such an elevated name for such a dishonorable man.<\/p>\n

One of these men we, who belong to Christ will meet, because that betrayer is in heaven.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The other, you who reject Christ, may meet, because he\u2019s in hell.<\/p>\n

One of these preachers ended in a suicide, hanging himself and not even doing that successfully – book of Acts tells us that his end came when he fell and was disemboweled on the rocks below.<\/p>\n

Whether the branch broke, the rope broke, or the knot was inadequate, he was a tragic suicide, eternally banished.<\/p>\n

The other ended his life a saint, crucified upside down and eternally blessed.<\/p>\n

Two men side by side for three years, experiencing exactly the same thing in the presence of the glorious Son of God, together ended up, as separated as two human beings can be, one in heaven and one in hell.<\/h3>\n

That separation may be portrayed a little bit in the listing of the apostles in the four places the apostles are listed in the New Testament.<\/p>\n

Peter is the first name and Judas is the last.<\/p>\n

Even there, they are separated, as far as they can be.<\/p>\n

One highly honored in heaven, the other highly dishonored in hell, what an amazing contrast.<\/p>\n

And they both had the same experience with Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

Their lives, in that sense, couldn\u2019t have been more similar, and their ends couldn\u2019t have been more dissimilar.<\/p>\n

What made the difference?<\/h3>\n

Why does Peter end up in heaven and Judas in hell?<\/p>\n

Well the answer is very simple – they had different attitudes toward Jesus Christ<\/em>, that\u2019s what it comes down to.<\/p>\n

Salvation isn\u2019t by works; they did the same works.<\/em><\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t by knowledge; they had the same knowledge.<\/em> They were given the same information.<\/p>\n

Salvation can be basically boiled down to a person\u2019s attitude toward Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

To put it simply, Peter loved Him and Judas hated Him, and they came out of the same context.<\/h3>\n

The same sun that melts the wax hardens the clay.<\/p>\n

Just to contemporize that a little bit, churches are full of the same kinds of people today.<\/p>\n

Churches are full of Peters and Judases, all hearing the same messages, hearing the same truth, same doctrine, same explanation of Scripture, having the same spiritual experience in the fellowship, seeing the same divine grace and power in the same people\u2019s lives, serving together, worshiping together, evangelizing together, and they end up in two extremely different places.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jesus pointed this out when He talked about the wheat and the tares, didn\u2019t He?<\/p>\n

And also in the Sermon on the Mount when He said, \u201cMany will say unto Me in that day, \u2018Lord, Lord,\u2019 and I\u2019ll say, \u2018Depart from Me, I never knew you.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The story of these two men, two kinds of sorrow really, is found in the twenty-sixth chapter of Matthew.\u00a0 Let me take you to that chapter and we\u2019re going to cover the whole chapter by moving rapidly.<\/p>\n

Jesus has just finished His great Second Coming sermon given on the Mount of Olives, the last sermon He gave to His disciples. He has reminded them that He is going to be returning to establish His kingdom; He\u2019ll come back in glory.<\/p>\n

Finishes that up, chapter 26, verse 1, and then says to His disciples, verse 2:<\/p>\n

2 \u201cYou know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be handed over for crucifixion.\u201d<\/span> –\u00a0\u00a0Matthew 26:2<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He was the final and only satisfying Passover Lamb.\u00a0 He would offer His life at the Passover as the true Passover Lamb, the true sacrifice for sin that God would accept.\u00a0 He is telling them about His coming death.\u00a0 It is very soon.<\/p>\n

Passover is coming; in fact, it\u2019s coming the next day.\u00a0\u00a0“The Son of Man is going to be handed over for crucifixion.”<\/span> This isn\u2019t the first time He had told them that.\u00a0 He has been talking about that for a long time.<\/p>\n

If you go all the way back to chapter 16, verse 21,<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and be raised up on the third day.\u201d –\u00a0Matthew 16:21 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And that\u2019s when, of course, Peter said,\u00a0\u201cGod, forbid it, Lord, this shall never happen to You.\u201d And Jesus turned to Peter and said, \u201cGet behind Me, Satan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, \u201cGod forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.\u201d 23 But He turned and said to Peter, \u201cGet behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God\u2019s interests, but man\u2019s.\u201d<\/span> –\u00a0Matthew 16:22-23 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But Jesus had been saying all along, “the Son of Man is to be handed over for crucifixion.\u201d<\/span> –\u00a0\u00a0Matthew 26:2, He was even specific about the way He would die.<\/p>\n

So Jesus is saying the time has come and in the meantime, verses 3 to 5 tell us, the rulers of Israel were planning it. They were gathered together in the court of the high priest named Caiaphas, and they plotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him.<\/p>\n

3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, named Caiaphas; 4 and they plotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him. 5 But they were saying, \u201cNot during the festival, otherwise a riot might occur among the people.\u201d – Matthew 26:3-5 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So they\u2019re working on hatching the plot while Jesus is telling them that it is coming.<\/p>\n

At this time, they find themselves in Bethany, according to verse 6, two miles from Jerusalem, east over the Mount of Olives, a little village of Bethany.<\/p>\n

“6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, at the home of Simon the leper, ”\u00a0 –\u00a0Matthew 26:6 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There were a couple of Christian families there, Simon the leper was one, and no doubt a man who had been healed from leprosy, and Mary, Martha and Lazarus lived in that little village.<\/p>\n

So Jesus was there in Bethany, and He was at the home of Simon the leper. And a woman came to Him with an alabaster vial, very expensive vial of very costly perfume. This would have been a small fortune in this bottle, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at the table.<\/p>\n

This was an act of lavish affection and love for the Lord. Verse 8 says,<\/p>\n

8 But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, \u201cWhy this waste? 9 For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.\u201d\u00a0 –\u00a0Matthew 26:8 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It sounds noble, doesn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

It sounds really noble. Who would have said that?<\/p>\n

John 12:4 says it was Judas.<\/p>\n

4 But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to betray Him, *said, 5 \u201cWhy was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor people?\u201d –\u00a0John 12:4-5\u00a0 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It was Judas.<\/p>\n

He was the protester.<\/p>\n

And by the way, this is the first revelation of this man\u2019s heart.<\/p>\n

Oh, earlier in John 6, verse 70, Jesus said,\u00a0 \u201cOne of you is a devil,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

70 Jesus answered them, \u201cDid I Myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?\u201d<\/span> –\u00a0John 6:70\u00a0 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

but that must have flown by because He didn\u2019t say who, and I\u2019m sure because there was zero suspicion among them of each other, they didn\u2019t even process it.<\/em><\/p>\n

Here is the first revelation of his character, and there is no suspicion of him whatsoever.<\/p>\n

He brings it up,<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you wasting this? We could have sold it and given the money to the poor.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t care about the poor, not at all.<\/p>\n

Another gospel writer tells us, \u201cHe said this because he had the bag\u201d – he had the money.\u00a0 This thing was going downhill fast.<\/em><\/p>\n

Judas had gotten in as a greedy, self-loving, ambitious man who saw Jesus as the means to his own satisfaction.<\/h3>\n

He wanted money; he was driven by greed and avarice and worldliness.<\/p>\n

He wanted prominence, power.<\/p>\n

He wanted to gain everything he could gain for himself, and he saw Jesus as the way to do that.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And now Jesus is not talking about a kingdom, not talking about power, not talking about being exalted.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s talking about death.<\/p>\n

And in verse 12 He takes it a step further and says that what this woman did, in a sense, is symbolic as a preparation for My burial.<\/p>\n

10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, \u201cWhy do you bother the woman? For she has done a good deed to Me. 11 For you always have the poor with you; but you do not always have Me. 12 For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it to prepare Me for burial.<\/strong><\/span>13 Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.\u201d–\u00a0Matthew 26:10-13 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jews would anoint bodies. They didn\u2019t embalm them, but they would anoint them in burial.<\/p>\n

Here was like a preliminary symbol of the fact that He was going to be dead and buried.<\/p>\n

Judas is in a panic.<\/h3>\n

He\u2019s got whatever he\u2019s got in the bag, and they made him the treasurer.\u00a0 That\u2019s how much they trusted him and how little suspicion – virtually none – there was of him as a hypocrite.<\/p>\n

And now because he knows he\u2019s going to get out, he wants to get out with whatever he can.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

He wishes that this had been sold so the money could go in the bag,<\/strong> because he held the bag and it would just give him back some compensation for having his ladder leaning against the wrong building for three years.<\/em><\/p>\n

He is crushed.\u00a0 His ambitions are smashed.\u00a0 He is terribly disappointed, and he is angry at Jesus.<\/p>\n

Verse 14 says, \u201cOne of the twelve,\u201d and that\u2019s how he\u2019s always introduced in the four gospels because it\u2019s so incredulous that he\u2019s in that group and acting this way.<\/p>\n

Judas\u2019s Bargain<\/strong><\/em>
\n14 Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, \u201cWhat are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?\u201d<\/strong><\/span> And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him. 16 From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus.”–\u00a0Matthew 26:14-16 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to Exodus 21:32 that\u2019s the price of a slave, that\u2019s the price of a slave.<\/em><\/p>\n

32 “If the ox gores a male or female slave, the owner shall give his or her master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned. ” –\u00a0\u00a0Exodus 21:32 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Please notice the word \u201cbetray\u201d in verse 15. \u201cWhat are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

They were afraid to go arrest Jesus in the middle of the day because He was mobbed by the people and He was popular with the people.<\/p>\n

They needed to get Him at night, but how could they find Him in the dark of night where there were no lights in the ancient world?<\/p>\n

Somebody had to reveal where He was.\u00a0 Judas said, \u201cI\u2019ll do that for the price of a slave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Verse 16, \u201cfrom then on he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Verse 17 introduces us to the Passover on that Thursday night where Jesus gathers to celebrate what had been inaugurated in the twelfth chapter of Exodus – the celebration of the deliverance of Israel out of Egypt.<\/p>\n

16 From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus.<\/p>\n

17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, \u201cWhere do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?\u201d –\u00a0Matthew 26:16-17 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They were going to hold the Passover, celebrate the Passover; they get together for that very event. It\u2019s indicated there in verses 17 and following.\u00a0 \u00a0Verse 20 says, \u201cJesus was reclining at a table with the twelve disciples.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now out of nowhere, as they were eating, He says, \u201cTruly I say to you, one of you will betray Me.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n

One of you will betray Me.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Last Passover<\/strong><\/em>
\n20 Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. 21 As they were eating, He said, \u201cTruly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.\u201d<\/span> –\u00a0Matthew 26:20-21 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Shocked beyond imagination.<\/p>\n

Shock.<\/p>\n

I could say the same thing today.<\/p>\n

Some of you will betray Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

You will defect.<\/p>\n

You will deny Him finally and terminally in a group this size.<\/p>\n

But among the Twelve?<\/h3>\n

One of you will betray Me?<\/p>\n

There is no suspicion about Judas, they\u2019re all deeply grieved.<\/p>\n

They each one began to say to Him, \u201cSurely not I, Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n

They were more suspicious of themselves then they were of Judas.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There was no suspicion directed at Judas.<\/p>\n

And the Lord answered:<\/p>\n

23 And He answered, \u201cHe who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me.”<\/span>–\u00a0Matthew 26:23 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

One right here at this table.<\/p>\n

The Old Testament says, \u201cMy own familiar friend, he will betray Me.\u201d<\/p>\n

24 “The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.<\/span>\u201d-\u00a0Matthew 26:24 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Never having been born – far better fate than eternity in hell.<\/p>\n

And Judas, keeping up the hypocrisy who was betraying Him, said,<\/p>\n

25 And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, \u201cSurely it is not I, Rabbi?\u201d Jesus said to him, \u201cYou have said it yourself.\u201d –\u00a0Matthew 26:25 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And he is only at the last hour finally exposed as the betrayer.<\/p>\n

At this point, John\u2019s gospel tells us Judas was dismissed.<\/p>\n

John said Satan entered him,\u00a0John 13:2 and 27, Satan entered him and Jesus said, \u201cWhat you do, do quickly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

“2 During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,” –\u00a0John 13:2<\/p>\n

“27 After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus said to him, \u201cWhat you do, do quickly.\u201d<\/span> –\u00a0John 13:27<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And Judas leaves and they have the Passover with Judas gone.\u00a0\u00a0After the Passover, go down to verse 30,<\/p>\n

30 “After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” –\u00a0Matthew 26:30 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They went out to the Mount of Olives.<\/p>\n

Passover was done, they went there to pray.<\/p>\n

36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, \u201cSit here while I go over there and pray.\u201d<\/span> 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He said to them, \u201cMy soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.\u201d<\/span>–\u00a0Matthew 26:36-38 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And you know He went there to pray. So the disciples are now in Gethsemane. Peter and John a little further in into the Garden. Jesus a little further in, praying alone.<\/p>\n

And here we pick up the story of Judas after he left.<\/h3>\n

He goes out and negotiates his deal with the leaders of Israel for 30 pieces of silver. He knows where they are in the familiar place in the Garden on the Mount of Olives and so we pick up the story in verse 45.\u00a0 Remember, they kept sleeping instead of praying.<\/p>\n

45 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, \u201cAre you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0–\u00a0Matthew 26:45-46 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Judas has arrived.<\/p>\n

And now we look at the man Judas.<\/h3>\n

Verse 47,<\/p>\n

Jesus\u2019 Betrayal and Arrest<\/strong><\/em>
\n47 While He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people.-\u00a0Matthew 26:47 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He\u2019s got a massive group of hundreds of people, including the temple police, the Roman soldiers, the leaders of Israel, all the elite religiosity purveyors of that apostate form of Judaism.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re all there to arrest Him in the night, away from the crowds.<\/p>\n

And Judas has given them a sign. Verse 48,<\/p>\n

48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, \u201cWhomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.\u201d-\u00a0Matthew 26:48 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There\u2019s some profound anger in that.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s some profound bitterness in that.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s hatred in that.<\/p>\n

49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, \u201cHail, Rabbi!\u201d and kissed Him.<\/p>\n

50 And Jesus said to him, \u201cFriend, do what you have come for.\u201d<\/span> Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. –\u00a0Matthew 26:49-50 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And Jesus said to him, \u201cFriend,\u201d and it\u2019s not the word for friend that is most used to refer to that; it\u2019s not the kind of friend that you think of as an intimate friend.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a word for associate or comrade; it\u2019s a more indifferent word; it\u2019s a more distant word–comrade or associate.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo what you have come for.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n

And they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.\u00a0 It\u2019s really unbelievable what Judas has done.<\/p>\n

Verse 57 says:<\/p>\n

57 Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. –\u00a0Matthew 26:57 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They were gathered together in this phony trial with false accusations.\u00a0 They tried to bribe witnesses to lie about Him, verse 59, trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus so they could have a reason to put Him to death.<\/p>\n

59 Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. –\u00a0Matthew 26:59 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They couldn\u2019t get people who could get their story together, though many people tried because they would be paid if they could.<\/p>\n

Finally some people came along and said He was going to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days, which He said at the beginning of His ministry.\u00a0 And this mock trial went from the high Priest to Herod, to Pilate, and you know all the phases of that trial.<\/p>\n

The final adjudication, the high priest, verse 65, tears his robes.<\/p>\n

65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, \u201cHe has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?\u201d They answered, \u201cHe deserves death!\u201d\u00a0–\u00a0Matthew 26:65-66 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They sentence Him to death; it\u2019s the death penalty.<\/p>\n

67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him, 68 and said, \u201cProphesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?\u201d-\u00a0Matthew 26:67-68 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That\u2019s the outcome of what Judas did.<\/h3>\n

That\u2019s the outcome for Jesus of His betrayal.\u00a0 But what about Judas? Go down to chapter 27.<\/p>\n

When morning came and the phony trial went through the night, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death.\u00a0 Bound Him, led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate who was the governor, head of the Roman force who would be the executioners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And then we read, concerning Judas, in verse 3,<\/p>\n

3 “Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, \u201cI have sinned by betraying innocent blood.\u201d But they said, \u201cWhat is that to us? See to that yourself!\u201d 5 And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. 6 The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, \u201cIt is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.\u201d 7 And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter\u2019s Field as a burial place for strangers.” –\u00a0\u00a0Matthew 27:3-7 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The horrible tragedy of Judas – hell forever, damned. Jesus said, he went to his own place.<\/p>\n

Judas is the greatest tragedy in human history because of the opportunity that he squandered.<\/h3>\n

Because of unparalleled privilege, he is the ultimate in wasted opportunity.<\/p>\n

Greedy, a materialist, a money-lover, earthy, full of avarice, greed, motivated by a desire for riches, and self-promotion.<\/p>\n

These things in him were so strong and so powerful and so overwhelming that they smothered the reality of who he was with<\/span>, for three years.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So strong was his sinful heart in its self-love that he ignored the Truth, the unmistakable glory of Christ, and he went to hell on purpose.<\/h3>\n

You might say he loved himself too much, he rejected salvation too often, and he resented Christ too strongly.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

He had seen the most powerful demonstration of deity ever unleashed in this world – the glory of God displayed in Jesus.\u00a0 And this is where he ended up.<\/p>\n

What a waste.<\/p>\n

What an end.<\/p>\n

Now I want to go back and I want to look at Peter, the second person, second preacher, second disciple.<\/h3>\n

So let\u2019s go back to chapter 26 and pick up the story.\u00a0\u00a0In verse 30 they sang a hymn and they went out to the Mount of Olives.<\/p>\n

“30 After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” –\u00a0Matthew 26:30 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And in verse 31, Jesus makes an amazing statement:<\/p>\n

31 Then Jesus said to them, \u201cYou will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, \u2018I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered.\u2019 32 But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.<\/strong><\/span>\u201d<\/span>–\u00a0Matthew 26:31 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

You\u2019re all going to defect. You\u2019re all going to fall. You will all be literally offended. You\u2019ll all have a kind of tacit denial, tacit betrayal.<\/p>\n

Now we don\u2019t have the record that the ten in between Peter and Judas actually denied Jesus verbally, publicly, openly; they just ran and hid.<\/p>\n

But then He says in verse 32, \u201cBut after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee,\u201d<\/span> which means that their defection was temporary and they would all be brought back together again.<\/p>\n

Theirs would be a temporary stumbling, a temporary falling, temporary defection.<\/p>\n

Not like Judas – his was forever.<\/p>\n

Well, this gives Peter the opportunity to boast.<\/p>\n

Verse 33,<\/p>\n

33 But Peter said to Him, \u201cEven though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away.\u201d –\u00a0Matthew 26:33 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

… never.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s adamant, confident.<\/p>\n

34 Jesus said to him, \u201cTruly I say to you that this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.\u201d<\/span> –\u00a0Matthew 26:34 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A rooster crows around three A.M. in the morning.\u00a0\u00a0You\u2019re going to deny Me three times before a rooster crows.<\/p>\n

35 Peter said to Him, \u201cEven if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.\u201d All the disciples said the same thing too.\u00a0\u00a0–\u00a0Matthew 26:35 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What a profession.<\/p>\n

As it turned out, Peter was over-confident.\u00a0 Jesus had warned him, \u201cYou\u2019re going to deny Me”<\/span>, you who said on another occasion, \u2018You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.\u2019\u201d You\u2019re the same one who also said, \u201cNo, no, no, Lord, You\u2019re not going to die,\u201d and at that moment Jesus said, \u2018Get behind Me, Satan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

You, with all the best theology, you with all the best of intentions, you\u2019re going to fail and you\u2019re going to fail dramatically. You\u2019re going to be ashamed of Me. You\u2019re going to deny Me. You\u2019re going to betray Me.<\/p>\n

And sure enough it happened. Go to verse 69.\u00a0 Jesus is taken to the high priest; trial is going on.<\/p>\n

Peter\u2019s Denials<\/strong><\/em>
\n69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, \u201cYou too were with Jesus the Galilean.\u201d 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, \u201cI do not know what you are talking about.\u201d –\u00a0\u00a0Matthew 26:69-70 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When he had gone out to the gateway, he heads for the door to get away from the fire because it lightens his face, and hides into the darkness a little bit. But another servant girl saw him and said to those who were there,<\/p>\n

71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to those who were there, \u201cThis man was with Jesus of Nazareth.\u201d 72 And again he denied it with an oath, \u201cI do not know the man.\u201d\u00a0–\u00a0\u00a0Matthew 26:71-72 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He\u2019s lying, and he\u2019s taking an oath that he\u2019s telling the truth when he knows he\u2019s lying.<\/p>\n

73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, \u201cSurely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away.\u201d-\u00a0\u00a0Matthew 26:73 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

You have a Galilean accent; we hear it.<\/p>\n

This is amazing.<\/p>\n

74 Then he began to curse and swear, \u201cI do not know the man!\u201d And immediately a rooster crowed.\u00a0\u00a0–\u00a0\u00a0Matthew 26:74 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The trial went through the night at the time when the rooster would crow, early before dawn.<\/p>\n

The signal was given on schedule, right after Peter on three occasions, in three locations, to different people had betrayed Jesus.<\/p>\n

Judas couldn\u2019t deal with the guilt of his betrayal.<\/p>\n

He felt remorse.<\/p>\n

He felt guilt.<\/p>\n

He felt sadness – sorrow that was so overwhelming that he killed himself.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s serious.<\/p>\n

When you commit suicide under the weight of guilt, you feel the guilt profoundly.<\/p>\n

What about Peter, did he kill himself?<\/p>\n

Done the same thing, he hadn\u2019t done it for money, but he had done it.<\/p>\n

In a sense, he was saying,<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t the Christ, this … \u201d He was giving them the same attitude that Judas gave them when he was willing to sell Jesus.<\/p>\n

But verse 75 says,<\/p>\n

“75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, \u201cBefore a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.\u201d<\/span> And he went out and wept bitterly.”\u00a0–\u00a0\u00a0Matthew 26:75 (NASB)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Peter didn\u2019t kill himself.<\/p>\n

He just went out and wept.<\/p>\n

Something happened in that moment you need to know about.<\/h3>\n

In the middle of Peter\u2019s denial, as his denial was coming to its end, Luke 22:61 says this – now they\u2019re in the courtyard of the high priest; Peter is milling around there in the shadows; Jesus is there being tried.<\/p>\n

Peter\u2019s kept his distance. But it says in Luke 22:61, \u201cAnd the Lord turned and looked at Peter<\/strong><\/em>\u201d – eyeball to eyeball.<\/p>\n

61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter.<\/strong><\/em> And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, \u201cBefore a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.\u201d<\/span> –\u00a0Luke 22:61 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When Judas\u2019 and Jesus\u2019 eyes met in the darkness of Gethsemane, Judas kissed Him with a kiss of hate, the kiss of a hypocrite.<\/h3>\n

When the eyes of Peter met the eyes of Jesus, he was crushed, he was shattered, he was devastated and broke down in genuine tears of true repentance.<\/h3>\n

Crushing sadness led Judas to suicide without<\/strong> repentance.<\/p>\n

Crushing sadness led Peter to restoration with<\/strong> repentance.<\/p>\n

And the difference was the way they looked at Christ, the way they responded to Christ.<\/span><\/h3>\n

For Peter, the vision of Christ drew him to repentance.<\/p>\n

For Judas, the vision of Christ drew him to suicide.<\/p>\n

You might say, \u201cFor Peter the vision of Christ drew him to heaven; for Judas, the vision of Christ drew him to hell.\u201d<\/p>\n

What was the difference?<\/p>\n

Peter loved Jesus Christ. He loved Him.<\/p>\n

After the resurrection in Galilee, according to John 21, Jesus found Peter, found him fishing, which he shouldn\u2019t have been doing, but he was.<\/p>\n

And he had breakfast with him by the shore of the lake.\u00a0 And He said this to Peter: \u201cPeter, do you love Me?\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s always the question, folks.\u00a0 That\u2019s the question.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t get too complicated about what it means to be a Christian.<\/h3>\n

It means you love Christ, that\u2019s what it means.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeter, do you love Me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFeed My sheep.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Peter, do you love Me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFeed My lambs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A few moments later: \u201cPeter, do you really love Me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And \u201cPeter was grieved because He said the third time, \u2018Do you love Me?<\/span>\u2019\u201d And what was Peter\u2019s response? \u201cLord, You know my heart, you know I love You.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is so much simplicity in that.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Love Motivation<\/strong><\/em>
\n15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, \u201cSimon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?\u201d<\/span> He said to Him, \u201cYes, Lord; You know that I love You.\u201d He said to him, \u201cTend My lambs.\u201d<\/span> 16 He said to him again a second time, \u201cSimon, son of John, do you love Me?\u201d<\/span> He said to Him, \u201cYes, Lord; You know that I love You.\u201d He said to him, \u201cShepherd My sheep.\u201d<\/span> 17 He said to him the third time, \u201cSimon, son of John, do you love Me?\u201d Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, \u201cDo you love Me?\u201d And he said to Him, \u201cLord, You know all things; You know that I love You.\u201d Jesus said to him, \u201cTend My sheep.”<\/span> – John 21:15-17<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What does it mean to be a Christian?<\/h3>\n

What is the difference between Judas and Peter?<\/p>\n

Love for Christ, love for Christ – that\u2019s the difference;\u00a0 that\u2019s the message of Christianity.<\/p>\n

“Feed My sheep; feed My lambs; feed My sheep. You\u2019re Mine; do My work based on the fact that you love Me.”<\/span><\/h3>\n

How you feel about Christ, how you view Him will determine your heaven or your hell.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Peter was a betrayer. And we could see how it happened.<\/p>\n

He boasted too much.<\/p>\n

He prayed too little.<\/p>\n

He acted too fast – drew out a sword and wanted to make a war.<\/p>\n

He followed too far; he stayed off in the shadows. So you can say, \u201cYeah, there were some factors in overconfidence and lack of prayer and impulsiveness and cowardice.<\/p>\n

But Peter was no final disaster.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He was no final disaster.<\/p>\n

Grace was operating in Peter\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

Grace was not operating in Judas\u2019 life.<\/p>\n

Grace was operating in Peter\u2019s life because Peter loved Jesus Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And John tells us in 1 John 4, \u201cWe love Him because He first loved us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jesus had set His love on Peter and Peter loved Him in return.<\/p>\n

They had a relationship of love.<\/strong> That is the deep and compelling attitude of the true believer. It comes down to this: the true believer\u2019s love for Christ is the evidence of salvation.<\/p>\n

In fact, in 1 Corinthians 16:22 Paul says, \u201cIf any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be damned.\u201d It comes to that.<\/p>\n

You look at Christianity, you look at the church, and you can get very complicated about what it means to be a Christian.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s this simple.<\/h3>\n

Look at your heart.<\/p>\n

Do you love Christ?<\/p>\n

Do you seek His honor?<\/p>\n

Seek His glory?<\/p>\n

Does your heart go out in affection toward Him?<\/p>\n

Do you desire to please Him, exalt Him, love Him, worship Him, commune with Him, hear Him?<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll sum it up:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you love Me,\u201d<\/span> John 14, \u201cyou keep My\u00a0<\/span>commandments\u201d<\/span> – you love His Word.<\/h3>\n

You love Him.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how love acts.<\/p>\n

That was Peter.<\/p>\n

Back in John 6, many of the disciples who didn\u2019t love Jesus, but hung around, left.<\/p>\n

John 6 says, \u201cMany of His disciples walked no more with Him.\u201d<\/p>\n

And then Jesus said, \u201cDo you also want to go away?\u201d<\/span> – Do you also want to leave? And Peter says, \u201cTo whom will we go? You [and You alone] have the words of life.\u201d We don\u2019t want to go. We want to stay because You give us the words of life.”<\/p>\n

He loved His Lord and He loved the truth that His Lord conveyed.<\/p>\n

Love desires to know the truth and obey the truth.<\/p>\n

Peter was secure because he had a love relationship with Christ.<\/p>\n

You remember back in Luke 22, verse 31, Jesus said to Peter,<\/p>\n

31 \u201cSimon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; 32 but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.<\/strong>\u201d<\/span> –\u00a0Luke 22:31-32 (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He\u2019s come and asked permission to go after you. He\u2019s going to sift you like wheat. \u201cBut when you are converted, strengthen the brethren.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

What was the guarantee that he would be converted, that he would survive that? Jesus said this one line,<\/p>\n

\u201cI have prayed for you that your faith fail not.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

He secures His own by His own intercessory prayer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Lord loved Peter; Peter loved the Lord. The Lord kept Peter even in the midst of a terrible betrayal.<\/p>\n

Peter was restored, recommissioned and became the great gospel preacher in the first era of the church.<\/h3>\n

From the beginning of Acts, Acts chapter 2, where he preaches on Pentecost, he\u2019s the dominating preacher for the first twelve chapters of Acts, the history of the church.<\/p>\n

Peter loved the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

He believed in Him with all his heart. He believed that He was the Son of God. Yes, he went through a terrible trial, horrible failure, epic disaster, but when his eyes met the eyes of Jesus in the deep night of that trial,\u00a0he was crushed into repentance because he loved Christ.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the mind of the saved soul.<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s about loving Christ.<\/p>\n

Do you love Christ?<\/p>\n

Peter gives a personal testimony when he writes his epistle. He says this in chapter 1, \u201cThough you have not seen Him, you love Him. And though you do not see Him now but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Peter had lived that.<\/p>\n

He had lived through an unbelievable trial, a disastrous failure, and in the midst of that he had seen Christ.<\/p>\n

And Christ had given him a look of love, restored him, recommissioned him, used him mightily.<\/h3>\n

Peter says, \u201cYou who haven\u2019t seen Him, you also love Him. And because of that, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, knowing you\u2019re going to receive the outcome of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.\u201d<\/p>\n

So two men, two students, two preachers indistinguishable to their close friends – one is a suicide, one is a saint; one is in hell, one is in heaven.<\/h3>\n

Both betrayed Jesus in very, very adamant, public ways – both at the same time, in the same kinds of circumstances.<\/p>\n

Similarities are many but no two men could be further apart, further separated than these two – Judas for whom Jesus was a disappointment, whom He resented, if not hated; Peter for whom Jesus was a Savior, whom he loved.<\/p>\n

Judas was a devil who went to his own place, the place he deserved.<\/p>\n

Peter was a saint who went to the place prepared for him, the place he did not deserve.<\/p>\n

Because in the end, Judas belonged to satan and Peter belonged to Jesus.<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s all about loving Christ.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s how you know your spiritual condition.<\/p>\n

A benediction, Ephesians 6:24, \u201cGrace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love.\u201d<\/h3>\n

Let me read that again,<\/p>\n

\u201cGrace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do you love Him?<\/p>\n

Do you love Him so that you long to honor Him, to please Him, to exalt Him, to lift up His Name, to obey His Word, to proclaim Him?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the mark of a true believer.<\/p>\n

Prayer:<\/h1>\n

Father, we ask that You would be merciful and gracious to us, as You always are to sinners who repent. Who would ask if there are any here who are in the category of Judas who have been experiencing maybe for a long time, maybe for years, the same experiences with all the rest. But they\u2019re going to end up separated from You and from all who belong to You forever in eternal punishment because there\u2019s no love for Christ. Give them a vision of Christ.<\/p>\n

Why do we preach Christ constantly, relentlessly, year after year after year? Why?<\/p>\n

Because it\u2019s the vision of Christ that saves; it\u2019s the lifting up of Christ that draws men.<\/p>\n

May Christ become all glorious, all wondrous, desirable, beautiful, magnificent, the desire of every heart.<\/p>\n

And for those of us who do love Him, and who stumble and fail, thank You for the grace that is continually extended to us.<\/p>\n

We confess that we don\u2019t love Him as we should, but we long to love Him more. We would desire to love with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Falling short of that, we ask for grace and forgiveness for our failures, failure to love. If we could love perfectly in that, there would be the keeping of the whole law.<\/p>\n

By Your power, by the working of the Holy Spirit in us, and by exposure to the truth in Holy Scripture, please increase our love for Christ.\u00a0 May He be all and all to us.<\/p>\n

Father, we ask that You would work Your work in our hearts to proclaim the truth as only the beginning.\u00a0 You have to do the work of making the truth bear fruit in hearts and we pray, Lord, that You would do that this day.\u00a0 We thank You for the blessed time of praise and exaltation and worship which lifted our souls, and we also thank You for the time of self-examination because we\u2019ve been instructed to examine ourselves whether we be in the faith.<\/p>\n

And may that honest examination go on and for those who know You, for the Peters in this congregation, may there be joy unspeakable, inexpressible and full of glory as we celebrate your grace toward us in Christ.\u00a0 Increase our love for Jesus, we pray in His wonderful name.\u00a0 Amen.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
